Apartment Owners, Builders Not Liable for Teacher's Death in Fire
According to the Huntsville Times, a county judge ruled that the owners and builders of an Alabama apartment complex where a teacher died in a fire are not liable for her death. The fire was deliberately set by a building resident, now serving a life sentence for the crime. The lawsuit alleged that lack of compliance with building codes contributed to the woman's death, even though the codes were not on the books when the complex was completed, 20 years before the fire. The judge also ruled that the defendants could not be held liable for someone else's criminal conduct. Lawyers for the teacher's estate plan an appeal, reported the Huntsville Times.
