$24 Million Sought in Daughters' Deaths in Police Car Collision
The Belleville News-Democrat reports that the mother of two girls killed when a state trooper smashed into their car has filed a $24 million wrongful death lawsuit against the state of Illinois and the Illinois State Police. The officer was on his way to investigate another vehicle accident when his police-issued Chevrolet Impala swerved across the median on an Illinois interstate. The trooper faced criminal charges in the crash, pleading not guilty to vehicular homicide. The lawsuit is seeking $12 million for each death. The girls were 13 and 18 when they died at the scene. According to the News-Democrat, an grand jury found that the trooper was engaged in unidentified "other activities" while driving. His car traveled at 126 miles per hour in busy traffic.
